How to Fix Clerk Auth Errors: System Clock Sync Solution

Published
•1 min read•View as Markdown

Are you struggling with currentUser() returning null or unexpected redirects in your Next.js/Clerk app? The solution might be simpler than you think!

🔍 The Problem

When using Clerk for authentication, you might encounter:

# Error 1: Null user with currentUser()
const user = await currentUser(); // Returns null despite being signed in

# Error 2: Restricted sign-in access
"The <SignIn/> component cannot when a user is already signed in"

These often occur due to time synchronization issues between your system and Clerk's servers.

🛠️ The Fix (3 Steps)

1. Sync Your System Clock

Windows:

  1. Press Win + I → "Time & Language"

  2. Toggle "Set time automatically" OFF → ON

  3. Click "Sync now"

💡 Why This Works

Clerk uses JWT tokens with strict time validation (nbf claims). Even a 1-2 minute clock skew can cause:

  • Token rejection

  • Session mismatches

  • Unexpected redirects
